Ten Tips for Saving Money During the Back-to-School Season

How are you saving money during this back-to-school season?  TwitterMoms and Staples have teamed up to ask bloggers what they are doing.

Here are my ten tips for saving money during this back-to-school season:

  1. Shop the back-to-school sales – it’s amazing what you can buy for a penny!
  2. Use coupons – look for manufacturer coupons to lower your bill
  3. Check websites for coupons – many stores have coupons on their websites that you can print and take to the store with you
  4. Get items free after rebate – FREE – need I say more!
  5. Comparison shop – check the Sunday ads and buy what you need at the lowest priced store
  6. Take lunch to school – school lunch is expensive (and often not healthy). Plan ahead and make healthy and inexpensive lunches for your children
  7. Stock up – buy supplies now when they are cheap!
  8. Evaluate what you have – does your child really need a new backpack?
  9. Use ads to price match – take a competitor’s ad to your local store and ask them to match the price
  10. . Don’t impulse buy – plan ahead, make a list, and don’t over spend

Staples makes going back-to-school easy for 2010:

Staples provides significant savings, a wide selection of quality products, and a one-stop shop and stress-free shopping experience.

  • Staples is in-stock throughout the entire season and into the start of the school year.
  • Staples kicks off the back-to-school season to provide customers with an official start date for back-to-school shopping and a clear roadmap for value throughout the season.
  • Staples is the expert on back-to-school, with more than 20 years experience.
  • Staples offers more ways to save from hot buys like penny and dollar deals to savings on technology to reduced low prices on hundreds of core items.

Cheap Textbooks

Do you have to buy textbooks for your child or for yourself? My advice – shop around! My daughter is starting her last semester at the University of Louisville (can you see my cartwheel???) and books usually cost my husband and I around $500.00. Last semester, I decided to look around the Internet to see if I could find her books cheaper. I found this awesome site called textbooks.com. Not only are they cheaper, they offer guaranteed buy back on most of their books. When my daughter has tried to sell her textbooks back locally, usually she gets nothing or if she’s lucky around $5.00! Look at this deal I did on Sunday:

Communication Law in America:

Local Book Store Price $64.25 (used)

Textbooks.com Price $44.97 (used)

Saved: $19.28

Contemporary Business Communication:

Local Book Store Price $140.75 (used)

Textbooks.com Price $109.78 (used)

Guaranteed buy back price by Textbooks.com $71.26

My Cost after buy back $38.52

Saved: $102.23

Acting One

Local Book Store Price $66.25

Textbooks.com Price $57.14

Guaranteed by back price by Textbooks.com $38.09

My Cost after buy back $19.05

Saved: $47.20

In addition, I didn’t have to pay taxes or shipping (shipping is provided FREE both ways – including when I sell back her books to them) and I went through eBates and earned an additional 5% back ($10.60).

My total cost this semester for books $66.25 (it will actually be lower but I don’t know how much I will get back on the Communication Law in America textbook when I sell it back).

It would have cost me $287.53 (includes tax) if I had bought the books locally.

That’s a savings of $221.28 or 77%.

Fortunately, her 4th class doesn’t require a book and since she is graduating in December she only needs 4 classes (compared to the usual 6 classes that she took per semester previously).

I was not paid for this write up about textbooks.com nor did I receive anything in compensation. They don’t even know that I exist. :) I just wanted to let everyone know about them and how much money you can save if you need textbooks!

We were a member of the Disney Movie Club for quite a while. We were able to get some movies for a good price. When I decided to cancel it was really easy – no pressure from them. Most of the movies also had Disney Movie Rewards codes as well that I then earned points on towards great rewards (Check any old Disney movies you have lying around at home. I found a ton of points in ours). Make sure you read about the requirements to make sure this deal is right for you.  :)
