Welcome to lesson three of my FREE 9 lesson online coupon class. Please ask questions and leave comments so that we can all learn from each other.

Assignment  #1 - Find a Place to Store your Stockpile

Think about how you want to organize your stockpile and work on organizing it this week.

They key to saving the most at the grocery store is to buy at rock bottom prices and then use coupons to make the prices even lower (maybe even FREE or a money maker).  Store sales follow a cycle (have you noticed that they repeat sales?). Generally stores follow a 6 – 12 week cycle (each store in each area is different).  To maximize your savings you should try and purchase enough of the item priced at rock bottom to last you until it goes on sale again (approximately 6 – 12 weeks’ worth of product). That doesn’t mean that I haven’t bought more than that of a product (see my post here on my dishwasher detergent stock up) but I generally follow the 6 – 12 week rule. You will find others who stockpile enough to last years, but that’s a personal preference. I don’t like having a lot of stuff in my home (my husband is always complaining that I throw away too much stuff). You will need to decide what works best for you and your family.

The best advice that I can give you (to keep your sanity) is that sales repeat. If you miss a sale or can’t make it to the store one week, it’s OK. The sale will repeat in 6 – 12 weeks and you can get the deal next time.

Once you start to build your stockpile you will need to find a place to store it! Here are some ideas:

  • Pantry
  • Closets
  • Bookcase in a bedroom/office
  • Garage
  • Tub under the bed

Since there are only 2 of us at home now, my stockpile is much smaller than it was before. I use my pantry, the hall closet, and a big tub under my bed.

Assignment #2E-mail a photo of Your Stockpile

I would love to showcase your stockpile. Please e-mail a photo to me and I will put the photos up on the blog. Send the photos to julia@couponingtobedebtfree.com

Assignment #3Create your Monthly Household Budget

Think about things you spend money on and develop a monthly budget. Remember, every household is different and what works for me may not work for you.

Budgeting is the key to getting your household expenses as low as possible. A deal is only a deal as long as you need it or will use it in the near future. If you have 6 months worth of toilet paper stockpiled at home you need to ask yourself if you really need to buy more. A sale will come around again within the next 12 weeks. Don’t spend money if you don’t need to. A good place to start with your budget is to think about how much you have spent each week on groceries during the last 8 weeks and then average that amount to get a weekly beginning budget amount. As time goes on, you should be able to decrease that amount quite a bit.

Here is our monthly budget:

  • Groceries – $200.00
  • Drugstores - $40.00
  • Pets - $20.00
  • Eating Out - $20.00
  • Miscellaneous – $40.00

You might think that $200.00 a month on groceries is a lot to spend on 2 people (my daughter just got married 2 weeks ago). It is….. However, we have a lot of pets – 3 dogs and 3 cats. Two of the dogs are very large and they eat a lot! The bulk of my drug store budget goes towards tax (6% in Kentucky) and the $20.00 in the pet category goes towards miscellaneous pet expenses (not food).

I decided to start using money envelopes for these expenses. The idea behind this system is that when the money runs out in a category, you have no more money to spend on that item for the month. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Below are pictures of the cute new envelope system that I bought last week (it cost around $19.00). One of my readers recommended the company. I just love it! If the idea of an envelope system to organize your money appeals to you, don’t think you have to go out and spend money on an organizer. I used envelopes that I got for FREE from my bank for a long time. Here’s a link to the company (if you are interested) that created my money organizer.

Final thoughts on developing your budget:

  • Be realistic (if you have a large family you will need to budget more money for groceries than my family)
  • Be flexible (be prepared to modify your budget – it’s inevitable)
  • Try budgeting using cash (you will be less likely to blow your budget)
  • Try and decrease your budget each week (as you get a handle on couponing and stockpiling, you should be able to decrease your budget by 30 – 50%)

I’m so glad you made organizing my stockpile an assignment. My New Years resolution is to be more organized, so you’re helping me out :) I don’t have a lot of room for huge stockpiles, but I think my husband and I do pretty well. Thanks again for doing these classes.

ps – I got my lightbulbs free from Target last week b/c the coupons added up to over the amount of the item, so she only took off the amount of the item :)

I hope to be able to have a reason to make room for a stockpile! I am still absorbing all the tips. Thanks

I am shopping for myself in college, so my stockpile is very small, but it has just enough for me and I still save a good amount of money! My main stockpile is for toiletries.

I have a pantry I created by putting bookcases in my tiny laundry room. My budget is about half of what yours is. I am enjoying couponing and the tips, but I am very careful not to purchase something just because it is on sale at a very low price…I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s Walgreens match-ups

Too funny that this is today’s assignment. I just purchased a large amount of items this weekend at great prices (approximately a 70% savings) and was just sitting here wondering where on earth I was going to put everything. :)

As I read this…I’m thinking of the 4 huge packs of toilet paper sitting in my closet. I have a big basement and could set up space down there if necessary…but I probably won’t shop to the point of having huge stockpiles. I also bought huge bottles of Listerine the other week when CVS had them half price (and I used coupons). I made room in bathroom vanity for them. I also now have several, several tubes of toothpaste in drawer in bathroom. I may elect to get a tub for under the bed for some of the smaller items. That sounds like a good plan for me right now. I foresee stores really starting to limit things so we can’t stockpile if you use a rewards/wellness card. I notice Rite Aid deal on the L’Oreal hair color says 1 per customer with Wellness card. Can you get more using seperate transactions if you used the Wellness card? Or do they keep track of how many times you do a transaction by the Wellness card?
Also, where did you find your small box (coupon organizer with the blue lid) and dividers? Sorry…I got long winded. Susan

My envelope system from that seller should be here any day :) I can’t wait to use it. The paper envelopes were not working for me in my large purse!

My stock pile is kept in the basement. I have a small cabinet for food and a large wire rack for the household stuff.

Thanks for the tips! I have not started stockpiling so need to organize it yet.

Since it is just my husband and myself I do not have a big stockpile. However, we are building on a garage and a pantry so there will be room to stock pile! Right now I have my cabinets organized and the main thing I have stocked up on is noodles and rice. I have plastic tubs that hold extra shampoo and cleaning supplies.

A budget is a must have for everyone! This year I started keeping all receipts so I can track (on an excel spreadsheet) how much we save in a year by using coupons!

I am just learning to coupon so my stockpile isn’t too large yet but I’m working on it! You motivated me to start my family budget and I also included a few spending goals. Thank you very much for the class!

My stockpile is in my pantry @ laundry room. I had another great week @ Publix with spending 68 and saving 78. I also got chec mix for free @ Wags yesterday!

Um, I don’t have a stockpile yet. I’m a beginner. :) Unless you count 1 extra bottle of laundry detergent.

I am definitely trying to learn not to feel like I have to jump on every sale. We have budgeted $500 a month for a family of five and that includes all groceries/household items. I’m trying to lessen my bill every week. It’s not easy but I like the challenge.

Hoping to have a stock pile to organize after learning how to do all this couponing! I finally took that free newspaper they throw at the end of my driveway each Sunday and actually opened it up! Wala – I found coupons in it!!! I’m so excited that I don’t even have to pay for a newspaper for these coupons! (I know it’s silly but I really thought the paper they threw out was just the local paper and not our New Orleans paper which has all the good coupons in it! – So the paper always went straight to the trash!)

I got the lightbulbs at Target totally free because they were on sale for even less than you had said. Was going to coupon more this year, so thanks for all the suggests, etc. :)

I am a beginner also. I have a small stockpile started. I have my pantry filled and a triple cabinet filled. I have cleared a shelving unit in my garage for my next big shopping trip. Also, I love your envelope organizer. I will be ordering one soon!!!

I’ve got two bookcases set up in my laundry room. Works for now. I need to organize them better though.

With a family of 7 in a 3 bedroom house with limited closet space, stockpiling has become somewhat of a challenge. I’ve really begun to use coupons over the past 6 months. I have a file folder sectioned off alphabetically. Seems to work for me for now. It’s saved me a lot of money and made me a more price conscious shopper. Thanks for the information to help me hone my skills. :)

When you start building a stockpile of things you use, how do you use your stockpile? For instance, I got a great deal on dishwasher detergent so have 3 extra boxes. When I run out of detergent, do I buy more or use from my stockpile?

Reply

Julia March 12, 2011 at 10:28 pm

I would use from my stockpile and restock the stockpile with the next sale.

Hi, I have been a serious couponer for several years. Thanks for all the info because I can still learn lots from others. I myself don’t stockpile much. I have 8 grown children and my freebies get consumbed by them and the rest I donate. The only rule is if I had to pay for it they have to pay me what I paid. The donations just make me feel good to help others out. I had $79.00 in totol freebies from wal-mart this week and I donated all of it. Thanks for doing what you do. You are very impressive.

I have a small stock pile which I have yet to organize. Right now my stock piles are laying all over the house. This Christmas I am putting some of my stock piles into plastic crates (like milk crates) then give them to my girls, step son and their families for Christmas. I have 2 daughters and their families and a step son and his family. I try to buy 4 of each item that is on sale or that I have a coupon for. Then divide it between myself and them. If less then 4 then I get to keep them for my stock pile.
